Objective: To determine what the weather conditions are around your ship and if they will impact on your voyage. 

Materials :

Instructions:
Part One: Observing weather satellite images 

  1. Take out Handout #6 (click on link above to print a copy of the handout, if needed).
  2. Follow the link to weather satellite image for the area where your ship is located (see Lesson Links), this will lead you to a site that will display a satellite image showing conditions above oceans in that area.
  3. Make observations of where the large cloud formations are located and where precipitation may be occurring.
  4. Note any major storms or atmospheric disturbances and mark their approximate location on your desk-size map.

Part Two: Observing effects of atmospheric disturbances on the surface of the ocean 

  1. Follow the link to " Ocean Wave Conditions ", this will lead you to a site that will display an images of the surface conditions of the world's oceans. The colors on the map indicate estimated wave height and the arrows show the estimated direction that the wave are moving.  The key at the bottom of the map explains what the colors mean.
  2. Note any areas of large waves and mark their approximate location on your desk-size map.

Part Three: Drawing conclusions 

  1. Did you see any relationship between where you noted the atmospheric disturbances and the areas of large wave action? If so, what might this be caused by? If not, why don't you think they are related?
  2. Do you think that your ship will be effected by the storms?
  3. Do you think that you should adjust your arrival time based on the weather observations you have made?
  4. Would you recommend that the captain change course?
