Legend Springs School, Glendale, Arizona

    We marked our squares with Mr. Levi's class in the front of our
school in the grass along our man-made creek.  We thought if we were
near the water we might see more interesting things.  Our observations
took place in mid October, still a warm time of year in our Arizona,
arid desert.  Our detectives noticed many things, including ants,
spiders, gnats, and crickets.  They also spotted seeds, rocks, dirt,
twigs, weeds, clovers, wood chips, and a licorice stick.  We saw many
living and non-living items.

     As a whole group, we decided to select schools in areas with very
different climates and environments than we have.  We chose to compare
with Rhode Island, South Carolina, and South Australia.  The children
were very excited to see what it was like on the other side of our
country as well as another country and continent!!  In South Carolina,
the children saw bushes, snails, large rocks, sand, berries, and soil.
 They saw many things that we did not.  In Rhode Island the children
noticed worms, mushrooms, centipedes, mosquitos, horse flies, and big
rocks.  That was quite a difference compared to our Arizona squares! 
Our kids were thrilled to be studying another continent!!  In South
Australia the students observed bees, butterflies, moths, ant eggs,
trees, and earwigs.  Our students loved seeing the differences among
all of the environments.
     As a class we discussed all of these differences.  They were able
to explain and understand that different climates have different
species of animals and plants growing.  They understand that we are a
dry desert while places like Rhode Island and South Carolina have more
humidity which will grow more colorful plants and different animals. 
Our children did a great job on their observing and note-taking.  They
loved learning about different environments and will always remember
this project.
