We compared our school to Wheelock School in New Hampshire. We are in second grade. They are in fourth. We chose them by voting. At first, there was a tie between Australia and New Hampshire. We voted again because it was a tie and New Hampshire won. We liked what their class found. They found a snake skin!
We compared the plants that we found with the plants at Wheelock School. We both found clover, acorns, bushes, trees, grass and flowers.
Some of the plants that we found were different. We found Mountain Laurel seed pods but they didn’t. They found mushrooms but we didn’t. We found purple berries, but they didn’t. They found a buttercup flower, but our flower was white. They found three kinds of trees and we only found one. They found a Burning bush. We found a Mountain Laurel bush.
We compared the animals at our school to the animals at Wheelock School. Both schools had bugs. We both found pill bugs, ants and a ladybug. Our school found a black bug with pincers and small white bugs, but they did not. They found a cicada skin and a beetle and we didn’t. We found a fly and they didn’t.
We both found spiders. Ours was black and theirs was red. We both found worms, but they were different kinds. Ours was an inchworm and theirs was in an acorn. They found an insect larva and we didn’t. We found a smooth, brown snail shell and they didn’t. Our school found lots of caterpillars. They were green and white and fuzzy. Wheelock School didn’t find any caterpillars.
We found a squirrel and they found a squirrel. We found a brown one and they found a red one. We found white and black feathers, but they didn’t find any feathers.
We compared the non-living things at our school to Wheelock School. We both had dirt and mud. They found sand, but we did not. We both had rocks. We found gravel, stones and a big piece of limestone, but they only found small rocks.
We both found trash. We found a piece of a toy, a ripped up coupon and a piece of green glass. They didn’t say what kind of trash they found. We found a quarter and a garden hose, but they didn’t find any other non-living things like that.
We liked working on the Squares of Life. We got to use the internet and read about what schools in other places found in their squares. We thought it was interesting. We made friends with another class and have pen pals now.
