Lulu Walker Elementary School Water Use Report

Q, Grade 5
Lulu Walker Elementary School
Tucson, Arizona, USA

My class and I kept track of how much water we used. We kept track for about a week. After a week everyone brought in their results. I found out that I used 3,143.25 gallons of water that week. On the other hand, the total of every fifth graders results in Walker School came out to be 320.00 gallons of water per day. Unfortunately, we dont know the average of which way our water goes down the drain [my water goes down the drain clockwise]. I also learned that the average person uses 80-100 gallons [approx. 300-375 liters] of water per day. I think this is a great project because it allowed me to share information about water usage with students in my class. It was kind of hard to keep track of how much water we use, especially keeping track of how many times we flush the toilet. I think a lot of kids would like to do this project.

Have you ever thought about how much water is used every single day by one person or millions of people? Well, by reading this, I think you will find your answer. Like you have read already, the average person uses 80-100 gallons of water per day. I really think that is a lot of water and that we use too much water. People need to drink water, brush their teeth, go to the bathroom, and all of the other things that involve water. Also, a lot of people waste water by leaving the water running when they are brushing their teeth and while hand washing dishes.

My class and I all live in Tucson, Arizona where it is very hot. I did some research on AOL Search about water usage around the world. The reason I went there was to see if people in hotter places use more water than people in colder places. I thought people in hotter places would use more water. The answer is that people in hotter places use 20% more than people in colder places. I believe this is true because people in hotter places drink more cold water and, because they dont get a lot of rain, more water is required to keep plants and animals alive. During the summer in Tucson, we are asked to conserve water by only watering our yards at certain times, not washing our cars frequently, and to not leave water running.

I never realized how much water is used when taking a shower, doing laundry, or even just brushing my teeth. I have shared my research with my family and we have decided to not use as much water as we used to.

As you can see I am getting to the end of my report, I had a lot of fun doing this project, I learned a lot of information about water usage around the world. It was very hard to find information and I would get mad but I kept at it and found a lot of information and thats when it started getting interesting. I found information in AOL search, at water dot com and all kinds of different web sites. I made some good predictions but unfortunately some of them were wrong and some of them were right [ most of them were wrong]. Like I said before I had a lot of fun doing this project.
