Madden Pond, New York
When we went to the Madden Pond we collected samples of macro invertebrates and
put our data on the Bucket Buddies website. Then we looked at the other schools
findings and compared them to ours.
Question: Are the macro invertebrates that are found in pond water all over the
world the same?
Hypothesis: Macro invertebrates that are found in pond water are different all
over the world.
We looked at reports from students in Minnesota, Arizona, Australia, New Jersey,
Illinois, and Florida. Florida found the most macro invertebrates that were
different from us. The macro invertebrates that they found were: Adult water
beetle, water beetle larva, bristle worms, pea shell cockle, daphnia, midge
larva, and mayfly nymph.
Out of the macro invertebrates they found, we only found the mayfly nymph.
We think the quality of their water is pretty clean.
Based on what we looked at most ponds all over the world have similar macro
invertebrates in them.
Waunakee, Wisconsin
Our hypothesis was that there would be whole
different types of macro invertebrates. We were half right. We found about half
of the same and a few different. One of the possible reasons for that is most of
the data entries, were in fact, in the United States of America. In places that
are not in the USA we found slightly different data. The numbers were very
different! We wondered about how many samples they had. The data we found was
very surprising. This draws a conclusion that they (the macro invertebrates) can
live in very different climates. The 4th graders and the 2nd graders paired up
with partners to do this project. It was a lot of fun!
